Chapter 27

Jasmin

I'm lounging in my room, content to just be here. I don't know where anyone is. I haven't seen Clem since breakfast, and Dahlia has been with her parents for several days. Kian has also taken a few days of much needed rest and relaxation. Emmeline has assured me he is reading for pleasure, and Clem has ensured he isn't just hiding in the library, reading more books about curses. Despite his exhaustion, he is still so accommodating. I haven't even seen Finn in a while. He is probably with Clem, though. Those two are like peas in a pod now. If I didn't know better, I would think Finn likes Clem more than me. I'm not going to entertain that notion, though.

Everyone else is busy, and I have some peace. As soon as my body collapses on the couch, the door opens. Finn prances to me, nudging his head in my lap for attention. Clem walks in next, with Dahlia close behind him. It's odd to see them together and not scowling. They look surprisingly happy, but why are they together? And both happy? Finn slinks away in search of food. I watch as Clem carelessly plops down next to me, giving me a quick kiss. There is something about this kiss…

“Did you kiss Dahlia?”

She gasps behind me, looking terrified at my question. Clem just has a goofy grin, very pleased with himself. He did kiss her! He presses his lips against my cheek and then settles into the couch, pulling me against his chest. His demeanor now is so at odds with how he has been around Dahlia before that I don't know what to do now.

“You should tell her what Kian said,” is all he responds with.

"Me? Seems like you should be the one to." I feel the anger simmering beneath my skin. I'm mad that he is being so nonchalant now when he hasn't been for months. I'm shocked to see Dahlia here with him. The last time we spoke, she couldn't even find the words to tell me what was wrong and refused to come back with me because of Clem. What the hell have they been up to that they are in such good spirits now? He senses my anger and kisses my cheek to try to soothe me. He fills in Dahlia with the story of Antirrhinum. After he finishes the story summary, he adds his own feelings.

"I've been irate and upset at the thought of losing Jasmin to you. I have noticed my feelings toward you changing, which made me more upset. To think I couldn't give myself fully to Jasmin wasn't something I could come to terms with on my own. Kian has helped me understand and process those feelings. I…I can see how this could work between us now. The three of us."

I'm surprised. I knew Clem was struggling with his emotions, but I didn't realize how conflicting they were for him. I thought he was just jealous this whole time.
